After winning five consecutive games at home, the Metros first game on the road trip from hell (nine out of ten away from home) saw them being shutout by the San Jose Earthquakes, 2:0. Wade Barrett and Landon Donovan scored the goals to thwart the Metros' attempt to set the longest winning streak in team history.

Ex-MetroStar Manny Lagos helped to put San Jose on the board in the 25th minute, finding Barrett with a back heel pass, with the latter blasting the ball past Tim Howard. Donovan's first career professional goal came in 84th minute, as he beat the Metro offside trap to slot one past Howard.

In losing, the Metros put forth their worst performance of the season, often seeming lifeless and disinterested. Alex Comas continued to amaze with his ineptitude, and Clint Mathis had by far his worst game of the season. Although the referee clearly missed a PK when Rodrigo Faria was taken down midway through the second half, there is no one to blame for the loss but the Metros themselves.

Lineup: Howard, Perez, Petke, Jolley, Chung, Alvarez, Williams, Villegas, Ramos, Mathis, Comas. Subs: Faria, Semioli, Klinger.
