Pedro Alvarez joins Metros in Portugal
February 22, 2001 (Official Press Release)

Veteran Colombian midfielder Pedro Alvarez has joined the MetroStars for training camp in Albufeira, Portugal, as the final details of his contract with the team and Major League Soccer are worked out. Alvarez joined the team late last night (Tuesday) and did not play today vs. Amika Wronki.

Alvarez, 31, will sign as the allocation player the MetroStars received, along with midfielder Richie Williams, from D.C. United in the trade for goalkeeper Mike Ammann earlier this month.

Alvarez will be the MetroStars' third senior international player, joining fellow Colombians Adolfo Valencia and Alex Comas.

A native of Itagui, Antioquia in Colombia, Alvarez spent four seasons (1996-2000) with Atletico Nacional in Colombia. As team captain, he helped lead the team to the championship of Copa Merconorte in 1998 and the Colombian League title in 1999. He spent last season with Colombian club Envigado FC.

Prior to joining Atletico Nacional, Alvarez also played for Colombian teams Atletico Junior (1995-1996) and Independiente Medellin (1991-1995).
