John Wolyniec hit in a rebound off an Amado Guevara free kick in the 73rd minute, giving the Metros their first win in six games, 1:0 over Kansas City. The shutout was the Metros' first of the year and moves them back into a first-place tie in the East.
With Cornell Glen out with the Trinidadian national team, Bob Bradley elected to rest the other half of the Ganja Twins, sitting Fabian Taylor. Sergio Galvan Rey and Wolyniec made the start, the only changes from last week's lineup, if one doesn't count Jeff Parke's newly cropped head.
Wolyniec had the best Metro chance of the first half, taking the ball on the right flank and hitting a shot that bounced in front of Fat Tony Meola, but thankfully for Kansas City, proceeded to miss the net.
Kansas City showed a complete absence of creativity in the attacking third throughout the game, with a number of harmless long shots that missed the net and another number completely smothered by Jonny Walker. Unfortunately, this lack of prowess didn't translate to their defensive end, as attack after Metro attack was thwarted. But in the 72nd minute, Taylor (who came on just three minutes earlier) was fouled in the offensive half, but far the corner of the box. Amado Guevara hit the ensuing free kick into traffic, with Eddie Gaven heading it into the lower half of the crossbar. The ball landed, and was met by the diving Wolyniec, who put it into the net. It was Wolyniec's third goal of the year, the second on a diving header.
The Wizards couldn't do much for the rest of the game, and the Metros got three important points after not being able to do so for over a month.
Lineup: Walker, Leitch, Pope, Parke, Ziadie, Lisi, Gaven, Vaca, Guevara, Galvan Rey, Wolyniec. Subs: Taylor, Clark, Regan.
