MetroFanatic talks to Nick Sakiewicz (Part 5)
January 18, 2005
Galvan Rey
MF: Today, Ives Galarcep has reported than Sergio Galvan Rey has rejected a transfer to Mexico. Is that true?
NS: It wasn't a transfer, it was a loan, but yes.
MF: So I assume you are actively trying to transfer him out, or loan him out.
NS: We're trying a place for him to play. He got limited time with us last year... I shouldn't say that, he got a lot of playing time last year. We're not sure he's gonna get a lot of playing time this year, and he needs to play. We will look into loan him, or transfer.
MF: According to reports, the transfer fee you paid for him was $400,000-$500,000, and right now it seems you can't sell him at all. Does nobody want him?
NS: Ummm... I can't talk about those numbers, I don't know where those numbers come from, but they're not accurate. We're trying to find a place for him to play. He's gonna come in and have a shot, and who knows, maybe this year will be better than last year. In Sergio's mind, he'll tell you that the same thing happened to him when he was at Once Caldas, and he thinks he's gonna come in here and have a great year. I hope that happens. I hope he lights it up, and scores goals, and delivers what he delivered in Colombia through eight seasons at Once Caldas. A year ago at this time, he was leading goalscorer for his club, and was leading his club to Copa Libertadores championship, which they ultimately ended up winning. So, hopefully he'll come into camp and do that. In the meantime, we're still exploring opportunities for him to play elsewhere.
MF: Why can't the MetroStars just cut him, like they did to Pedro Alvarez, who also had a multi-year deal?
NS: He wasn't on a guaranteed contract. Galvan Rey is on a guaranteed contract for one more season.
