MetroFanatic talks to Nick Sakiewicz (Part 6)
January 18, 2005
Allocation money
MF: The Ricardo Clark allocation money, is it too early to talk how that's gonna be spent?
NS: Yeah, we got a lot of players coming into camp, so it's too early to tell.
MF: A source in England has told us that the MetroStars are talking with Youri Djorkaeff.
NS: We're having discussions with Youri.
MF: Is it close?
NS: No, I wouldn't say it's close. We've had some positive discussions with him, he's a tremendous guy, great professional. Quality, experienced, season veteran, which is what we're looking for.
MF: So it will not be another Lothar Matthaus situation, who cares more about the paycheck?
NS: Oh, he is a very different person. Youri is a first-class person.
MF: Will Bradley bring some players from Brazil because he liked what he saw in Gilberto?
NS: We're bringing in a lot of players from a lot of different places on the planet. Africa, South America, Europe. Mo and Bob have been very busy looking at players. Bob has spent quite a bit of time in Brazil, and Mo spent some time in England. We're bringing in a lot of guys, and the move on Friday with Ricardo and bringing in the acquisition money and now with five international slots, and can potentially have up to three... I'm sorry, two senior international slots.
MF: If Bonseu gets a green card?
NS: Well, Bonseu and we traded Cornell, so Bonseu is on a semi-guaranteed contract. So the only senior internationals that we're obligated to are Guevara and Galvan Rey. So we have up to two potential slots there, plus five youth slots.
MF: Four, because Gilberto is one of them.
NS: Right.
MF: And Vaca is not?
NS: Vaca is a free agent, he's unsigned. So we have up to five youth international slots. So we have some mobility to do stuff, we acquired a little bit of money. We need to acquire more, but we have a little bit of money this time.
MF: Guevara's extension, is that being worked on?
NS: Guevara is under contract for two more seasons, and we're working... Now that we passed the draft, we're gonna focus onto looking at his contract.
Bradley
MF: How safe is Bob Bradley? If the team doesn't succeed, will you fire him?
NS: Bob is a very good coach. I enjoy working with Bob. He is a breath of fresh air when it comes working with coaches in the professional ranks. I have a lot of faith in Bob and in the job that he can do. This is a very important year for us. We need to take the team to another level. No one knows that more than Bob. I don't put pressure on Bob, because Bob puts more pressure than he probably needs to on himself, which is what I like about Bob, because he sets his own standard too high. So, no, I'm not gonna fire Bob Bradley, he has this year to do the kind of job that he is expecting that he can do, and that we all expect that he can do, and we're 110% behind him and his efforts.
