MetroFanatic talks to Nick Sakiewicz (Part 7)
January 18, 2005
Distrust
MF: We talked a bit about this pre-interview, but I would like to get you on record. There is a group of fans, hardcore fans are you call them, who do not trust the MFO anymore. What do you do about that group of fans?
NS: Well, trust is a big thing to me, I don't know what the Front Office has done to that group of fans to create that distrust. But these doors have always been open. We will try to communicate to them closer and more effectively. I think we can do that, on our part, better. At the end of the day, if there's a group out there that doesn't trust us anymore, I'm not sure you can ever come back from distrust. When trust is gone, whether it's a marriage, or friendship, or a business relationship, you're pretty much dead.
MF: Those fans might as well be dead to you?
NS: There's no fans that are dead to us. We're gonna try to reach out to them, try to communicate with them, but there's nothing I can do if they don't trust us.
MF: So what will you tell to that fan who went to all the Metro games the first X years, but has now stopped coming?
NS: We're gonna tell them that we're working hard, that we're trying to address their concerns, in the most honest and straightforward way that we can. We're gonna tell them we're committed to winning a championship, and that we're committed to making ourselves a profitable organization with a stadium and practice facilities, and at the end of the day, that's the truth. If people decide not to believe that, there's not a lot more I can do, or this front office can do.
Practice facility
MF: You mentioned the practice facility a couple of times. You were supposed to move there this year according to the press release.
NS: We're supposed to move there by October of this year.
MF: So now it's October of 2005. The practice facility will be built there and the offices will move there by October of 2005.
NS: I've been told that we will be able to move there in October by the developer. I am a little skeptical about that right now, with the construction.
MF: In the original press release it said last year, and now you're saying this year (MF apologizes: NS said "2004" in an interview with USsoccerUK.com, not the official release). So it got pushed back because of developer issues.
NS: Yeah, the developer is having problems.
MF: But that will get built.
NS: We're hopeful. We're still having positive conversations with the developer. He's trying to get us into the ground.
Final thought
MF: And in one word, Harrison will get built by 2007?
NS: That's what we're aiming for now. There's still a very outside shot we may be able to open by 2006, but I don't think so. I think it's 2007 now.
MF: Thank you, Nick.
