The Kansas City Wizards maintain a one-point lead in the league standings, earning a 0-0 draw against the MetroStars Wednesday evening at Giants Stadium. Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola recorded his fourteenth shutout of the season in the match, while MetroStars 'keeper Tim Howard earned his fourth clean sheet of the 2000 campaign.

The visiting Wizards played a tight, defensive game from the opening whistle, seemingly resigned to earn the draw. Both squads did manage a handful of quality scoring chances throughout regulation, but neither side could put the ball in the back of the net. Defender Mike Petke had the most exciting chance in regulation play, forcing Meola to tip a vicious 40-yard rocket over the bar to concede the corner kick in the 62nd minute.

MetroStars midfielder Mark Chung volleyed a hard shot on goal in the second overtime period, but Meola was in position to easily collect the ball. On the other end of the field, Kansas City's Vicente Figueroa threaded a dangerous ball to Chris Henderson inside the box, but Henderson's shot went just wide of the near post.

The goalless result leaves two players hovering on the verge of breaking goal-scoring records. MetroStars forward Adolfo Valencia needs just one more goal to break Giovanni Savarese's team-high mark of 14 goals in a single season (set in both 1997 and 1998), while Kansas City midfielder Preki's next tally will make him the first player in MLS history to record 50 career goals and 50 assists.

Lineup: Howard, Dooley, Jolley, Matthaus, Petke, Chung, Ramos, Villegas, Myers, Valencia, Mathis. Subs: Gomez, Comas, Walsh.
