Maybe the Metros should play on the road every week, because they can't seem to score any goals at Giants Stadium. Shutout at home for the third time in four games, they lost to San Jose, 1:0, on a Ronald Cerritos goal in the 60th minute.

With Jeff Agoos, Youri Djorkaeff, and John Wolyniec still out with injuries, the MetroStars played the same lineup as in last week's win over Colorado. And early on it seemed to work fine as Metros had most of the play in the first half. They hit the woodwork twice, first with an Amado Guevara blast, and then with Sergio Galvan Rey's header off a corner kick.

But the second half was completely different. A Brad Davis cross found Ronald Cerritos' head in the 60th minute, and with the Metro defense, especially Carlos Mendes caught ball-watching, the Salvadorian easily knocked it into the Metro net. The rest of the match was an exercise in futility, as San Jose continued to foul the Metros every time they got the ball in central midfield. To their discredit, the Metros could not do anything with their possessions, and went the full half without a harmful shot at Pat Onstad.

The sole bright spot was the performance of Tim Ward, who looks to be a find at the left back position.

Lineup: Wells, Ward, Mendes, Regan, Leitch, Bradley, Lisi, Guevara, Gaven, Galvan Rey, Magee. Subs: Ibrahim.
