Following the results from the June 18 3-2 victory over the Crew, the MetroStar's reserve team pulled out a one goal victory over their opponents from Columbus. Due to the unavailability of Giant's Stadium the reserve game was played at the home of Big East soccer powerhouse, St. John's University.

The first half saw little to no offensive action. The MetroStars had several shots easily saved by Crew goalkeeper, Andrew Ferris. The MetroStars best opportunity in the first half came at in 17th minute when Jerrod Laventure found himself unmarked at the back post. His header however, was shot directly at Ferris who caught the ball with no problems.

In the back for the Metros, captain Seth Stammler had a stellar first half, stopping numerous Crew attacks and causing problems for their strikers for the entire 45 minutes. Although they struggled to create offensive opportunities, the Crew waited until the last play of the first half to have their first shot on goal. The Crew's Rutledge found the ball in front of him inside the box and quickly released a shot at goal which bounced off of the crossbar and then cleared by a MetroStars defender out of bounds, which was followed by the whistle for the end of the first half by game referee Roni Canales.

The start of the second half saw the MetroStars bring on defender Douglas Hare for Mamadou Diallo. MetroStars forward Sergio Galvan Rey had the first opportunity in the second half at the 48th minute mark when he received a pass from midfielder Danilo da Silva, and fired a shot which was saved by Ferris.

Three minutes later Galvan Rey would have another shot stopped by Ferris. Again it was da Silva to Galvan Rey, this time Galvan Rey's header went a couple inches too high over the crossbar. At the 58th minute mark the Crew's Domenic Mediate placed a dangerous low cross across the box, but several Crew attackers were unable to get a touch on the ball.

At the 62nd mark the Crew made their first change of the game, bringing on Withers for Rutledge. Minutes later Metro's captain Seth Stammler had blistering shot at goal which forced Crew goalkeeper to make a beautiful diving save, which resulted in a MetroStars corner. The MetroStars made their second change of the game at the 65th minute when they brought on midfielder Robens Jerome for fellow midfielder Carlos Mendes. The Crew followed up the Metro's tactical move three minutes later bringing on midfielder O'Rourke for Eric Vasquez.

The game finally saw its first goal in the 78th minute when Galvan Rey struck a beautiful chip shot over the Crew goalie into the corner of the net. The Metro's striker took part in the Saturday night's game and therefore was unable to play the full 90 minutes of today's reserve game. The MetroStars however, had no one to replace Galvan Rey and therefore had to finish the game with ten men.

Just four minutes after the MetroStars were reduced to ten men due to the 90 minute rule, Crew defender Mark Schulte was shown the red card for abusive langue towards the referee, equaling the field with both sides left with only ten men.
