USA gets eaten by the Group of Death
June 22, 2006
Blame the referees. Blame the ball. Blame the Group of Death. Blame the scheduling. Blame Europe. Blame Lothar Matthaus.
Blame Bruce Arena's player selection. Blame Bruce Arena's lineup. Blame Bruce Arena's formation. Blame Bruce Arena's substitutions. Blame Bruce Arena.
Blame Oguchi Onyewu. Blame DaMarcus Beasley. Blame Landon Donovan. Blame Landon Donovan again.
Blame luck. Blame lack of creativity. Blame overconfidence. Blame complacency.
At the end, it doesn't batter who or what you blame. What matters is that the US got the result it needed from Italy, and then laid down against Ghana, losing 2:1, the last Ghana goal coming on a very questionable penalty kick. Clint Dempsey scored for the US in the 43rd, but the spot kick in first half injury time sealed the American fate, as they could do absolutely nothing in the second half.
Blame the United States national soccer team.
