Ten Best: Metro vs DC Scum
August 15, 2006

With a key match against DC Scum coming up soon, we take a look at ten of the best matches between the two clubs. Believe it or not, the rivalry has not been as lopsided as it sometimes seems.

  • 10) May 12, 1996: DC United 1, MetroStars 1 (1:2 SO)
In the first meeting between the two teams, Giovanni Savarese continues his early-season spree, tying the game in the second half. Nicola Caricola and Ruben Dario Hernandez score in the shootout as the rivalry is born.

  • 9) April 17, 2004: MetroStars 3, DC United 2
With Metro down 1:0 at the half, the insertion of Fabian Taylor changes the game. He quickly ties it, following his own rebound. Then, John Wolyniec's diving header gives Metro the lead, and Taylor seals it a few minutes later.

  • 8) July 27, 1997: MetroStars 2, DC United 1
Metros go down 1:0 in the second half, but Savarese ties the game just three minutes after entering it as a sub. Eight minutes from time, Antony De Avila gives Metro the winner.

  • 7) August 25, 2002: MetroStars 1, DC United 0
Tim Howard stands on his head, Mamadou Diallo misses a penalty, and the moustached Clint Mathis scores after a Rodrigo Faria cross two minutes into injury time to give Metro the victory.

  • 6) October 8, 2005: DC United 1, MetroStars 2
Badly needing points in the penultimate regular season game, Metros go up early on a Sergio Galvan Rey goal before DC ties it late in the first half. Seth Stammler becomes an unlikely hero, following his own blocked cross with a perfect ball that finds on onrushing Youri Djorkaeff, who slams it home for Metro.

  • 5) April 22, 2000: DC United 2, MetroStars 3 (OT)
In the game that started the 2000 resurgence and saw the debut of Steve Jolley, Metro takes the early lead though a Jeff Agoos own goal. Before the first half was over, DC would get two, and the Metros respond after an Adolfo Valencia cross finds Petter Villegas. Valencia's ejection in the second half sees Metro bunker for the rest of the match, and then enter the first overtime in the club's MLS regular season history. In the 94th minute, Lothar Matthaus' long free kick bounces in the box and is headed in by Mike Petke for the golden goal victory.

  • 4) October 1, 2003: MetroStars 3, DC United 2
In the Open Cup semifinals at Rutgers, the Metros make the first final in team history. Amado Guevara scores the Metros' first two goals, but it is Wolyniec who plays hero, scoring the team's third with just two minutes left in regulation.

  • 3) July 5, 2003: DC United 2, MetroStars 3 (OT)
Down to ten men since the 35th minute, the Metros hold off a charging DC squad to end regulation in a draw. Then, Bob Bradley pulls the old switcheroo, putting Eddie Gaven, in only his second career game, into the nets for less than a minute to start overtime. Howard makes an incredible save to keep the game tied, and then Gaven races down the sideline and notches the game-winner. Jaime Moreno and Ricardo Clark had the other Metro goals.

  • 2) September 24, 1996: MetroStars 2, DC United 2 (6:5 SO)
In the first playoff game in Metro history, Savarese ties the match at twos in the 75th after coming onto the field just a minute earlier (De Avila scored the first Metro goal). Then, an epic shootout ensues, and the injured Peter Vermes hobbles and scores in the 11th frame to give the Metros the win.

  • 1) May 5, 2001: MetroStars 3, DC United 2
Down by two in the 79th minute, it looks like everything is doomed. But the MetroStars score three in a terrific span as first Mathis, then Faria in the 88th, and then Villegas in the 90th each knock one in to pull out the most incredible regulation win in Metro history.
