The return of Danilo da Silva?
December 13, 2006
Do you remember Danilo da Silva? Even though he wore Metro colors just a year ago, his name sure seemed destined for Obscure Metro Files. A no-name player from a no-name Brazilian club who played just six games for Metro until disappearing back into wilderness... That is, until word got out that the new regime, led by Danilo's former teammate, Jeff Agoos, is looking to bring da Silva back into fold.
And if the current regime is up front with da Silva, it will be a refreshing change from the Mo Johnston and Alexi Lalas combo a year ago. Not only did they keep Danilo in the dark about his status with the team during last year's offseason, they sent out mixed messages. On the same day that we were told by the club that da Silva signed with a team in Brazil, Mo Johnston proclaimed that he hadn't and will join Metro. Of course, Danilo never did.
What makes his story even more interesting is that Johnston had a definite trade offer from another MLS team for Danilo's services, an offer he decided to not take. Which raises the question, why not trade a player who does not figure in your plans? Even a low draft pick is better than nothing, for that was the result Metro got from da Silva in 2006.
At the end, if Danilo comes back to Metro in 2007 and contributes, we might end up praising Mo's stupidity. Now if we can only have another crack at Abbe Ibrahim...
