MetroStars and DC United played to a 2-2 draw in the second game of a Unity Games doubleheader at Giants Stadium on Sunday night. The teams played with a number of guest players on each side with ex-MetroStars Rhett Harty, Tony Meola, Brian Kelly, and Miles Joseph making appearances for the home team.
The first goal of the game came from MetroStars forward Rodrigo Faria in the 16th minute. Brazilian midfielder Gilmar advanced down the right side of the United box and sent a low cross toward his fellow Brazilian. Faria, the 2001 Rookie of the Year, easily knocked home the cross at the far post.
Faria was dangerous on a number of other occasions in the first half. Colombian midfielder Pedro Alvarez fed him on the right side of the box in the 23rd minute but his close-range shot was saved by United goalkeeper Mark Simpson. In the 29th minute Faria just missed the mark on a header off a service from Mark Chung and in the 40th minute his diagonal shot from the left corner of the box went through a host of players and finished wide right.
DC United tied the match with three minutes remaining in the first half. In the 42nd minute Mark Lisi lofted a cross from the right end line and forward Abdul Thompson Conteh headed the ball toward the top of the six-yard box. United forward Chris Albright rose up to beat MetroStars defender Steve Jolley and goalkeeper Paul Grafer to nod the ball into the net.
In the 55th minute the MetroStars re-took the lead through Joseph, who played for the Metros between 1996-2000. Harty, a popular former MetroStars defender, sent a cross into the box which Llamosa missed clearing. The service then fell to Joseph, who easily beat goalkeeper Mike McGinty.
DC United's A.J. Wood missed tying the match in the 59th minute when the ball trickled to him in the box after Metros goalkeeper Grafer and United's Conteh collided near the top of the box. Moments later it was Lisi's point-blank shot on goal which was saved by Grafer, who came off his line to block.
Llamosa, a guest player for DC United, would go on to tie the match in the 87th minute on a penalty kick.
The second night of the Unity Games takes place on Saturday, November 3 at RFK Stadium where both teams will face each other in a re-match.
