Dunivant - Goldthwaite trade goes through
June 27, 2007 (Official Press Release)
Red Bull New York announced today that it has acquired defender Kevin Goldthwaite from Toronto FC in exchange for defender Todd Dunivant. "We're excited to have Kevin Goldthwaite as a member of the New York Red Bulls. We believe he is a good, young talent who has his whole career ahead of him and we expect Kevin to be able to contribute significantly to our team," said Red Bull New York Technical Director Jeff Agoos. "It was a very difficult decision for us to trade Todd. We certainly appreciate everything he's done for our club. He's been a very good professional and a very good player for the Red Bulls and we wish him the best of luck in Toronto and in his career."
Goldthwaite was in the midst of his first season for Toronto FC, where he started and played in nine games. The 24-year-old from Sacramento, CA scored the eventual game-winning goal on May 12 in Toronto FC's first-ever win -- a 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire at BMO Field. Goldthwaite also earned an assist in a 4-0 defeat of FC Dallas on June 17.
Toronto FC acquired Goldthwaite along with a first round 2008 MLS SuperDraft pick from Houston in a trade that sent midfielder Richard Mulrooney to the Dynamo on April 19. Prior to the deal, Goldthwaite featured in one game for the Dynamo as a substitute. Last season, the 6-1, 175-pound left sided player saw time in 20 games and made eight starts, earning one assist. Goldthwaite also featured in three matches for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2005 after being drafted in the second round (17th overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft before being loaned out to USL First Division side, the Portland Timbers.
Attending the University of Notre Dame, the former All-Big East First Team and MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist had spent two weeks training with French First Division club Auxerre in December 2004.
Dunivant had started and played in seven matches for the Red Bulls this season. He was acquired by New York on June 27, 2006 from the Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for a partial allocation. Last season, Dunivant made a total of 22 appearances (21 starts) between New York and Los Angeles, notching two goals and two assists.
