Mathis traded to Galaxy for a ham sandwich
November 19, 2007 (Official Press Release)
Red Bull New York announced today that it has acquired a 2008 third round SuperDraft pick from the Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for midfielder/forward Clint Mathis. Per MLS and team regulations, specific terms of the deal are undisclosed.
"By acquiring this pick, we will now be able to have a selection in every round of the 2008 SuperDraft. This allows us more flexibility moving forward," said Red Bull New York Technical Director Jeff Agoos. "This was a very difficult decision but I would like to thank Clint for his work this year and wish him the best of luck in the future."
Mathis is the franchise's all-time leading goal-scorer in all competitions with 45, breaking Giovanni Savarese's record in a 5-4 win over the Galaxy on August 18. The Conyers, Georgia, native served his second stint with the Red Bulls in 2007 after being acquired from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a 2008 fourth round MLS SuperDraft pick and a conditional pick in 2009. This season, Mathis played in 26 games, starting in 19 and scoring six goals and two assists.
The former U.S. National Team standout, who earned 46 caps for his country, played with the MetroStars from 2000-2003 and garnered MLS Best XI honors after finishing the 2000 season with 16 goals and 14 assists. That campaign included a five-goal performance against the Dallas Burn on August 26, 2000, where he set the MLS record for most goals in a single game.
