Ten Best: Metro foreigners (update)
November 24, 2007
Since we last looked at the ten best foreigners in Metro history, an update has to be made. For descriptions of the initial top ten, see the original article.
10) Diego Sonora, Argentina, 1998
9) Petter Villegas, Ecuador, 1996; 1999-2002
8) Rodrigo Faria, Brazil, 2001-02
7) Antony De Avila, Colombia, 1996-97
6) Adolfo Valencia, Colombia, 2000-01
5) Juan Pablo Angel, Colombia, 2007- The well-publicized search for a Designated Player had Metro linked with many huge names, but they "settled" for Angel. The Cherubic Assassin didn't disappoint, bursting on the scene by scoring in six straight games and ending the regular season with 19 league goals, smashing Valencia's team record.
4) Roberto Donadoni, Italy, 1996-97
3) Youri Djorkaeff, France, 2005-06 His disappointing second season will never make us forget the magical 2005, when Youri took the team and his back and carried it, turning in one magical performance after another. His totals of 13 goals and 12 assists, diluted by the indifferent 2006, do not do him justice.
2) Giovanni Savarese, Venezuela, 1996-98
1) Amado Guevara, Honduras, 2003-06 Oh, Amado. What could have been... but let's just focus on the positives for this list. The stats are maddening: 39 goals, third best in team history. 39 assists, tied for first in team history. Three hat-tricks. League MVP in 2004. Deadly penalty taker. The engine that ran Metro for four years.
