Ten Best: Metro foreigners (update)
October 27, 2008

Since we last looked at the ten best foreigners in Metro history, an update has to be made. For descriptions of the initial top ten, see the original article, as well as last year's update.

  • 10) Petter Villegas, Ecuador, 1996; 1999-2002

  • 9) Rodrigo Faria, Brazil, 2001-02

  • 8) Antony De Avila, Colombia, 1996-97

  • 7) Adolfo Valencia, Colombia, 2000-01

  • 6) Dave van den Bergh, Netherlands, 2007-
He was acquired without much fanfare for a third round supplemental pick, and proceeded to have a solid 2007, with two goals in eight assists. His 2008 was even better: seven goals, five assists, carrying the team for long stretches of time. Best at left midfield, he's done everything asked for him, even filling in at left back when necessary. Arguably the best crosser in Metro history.

  • 5) Roberto Donadoni, Italy, 1996-97

  • 4) Youri Djorkaeff, France, 2005-06

  • 3) Juan Pablo Angel, Colombia, 2007-
Angel was injured in early 2008, starting the year slowly, but soared in the summer and beyond, anding the regular season ended with 14 goals, and now has 33 league goals to his name after just two seasons with Metro. One more year like this, and the top spot -- on the Metro all time scoring chart, and on many of our Top 10 lists -- just might be his.

  • 2) Giovanni Savarese, Venezuela, 1996-98

  • 1) Amado Guevara, Honduras, 2003-06
