Ten Best: Metro vs Kansas City
October 10, 2011

Even though Metro and KC spent a large part of their lifetimes in separate conferences, there have been quite a number of memorable games between the two. So, heading into the pivotal contest that might determine both teams' playoff fate, let's revisit.

  • 10) September 3, 2005: MetroStars 2, Kansas City 2
The teams have played their share of memorable draws, including one earlier in 2005 when Sergio Galvan Rey inexplicably scored twice to level the game. But if we had to pick one, we'd go with this contest, when Metro wore orange jerseys as part of Hurricane Katrine relief efforts. KC scored early, Metro replied on a short free kick, Amado Guevara feeding Youri Djorkaeff. KC responded, but with two minutes left, Ante Razov curled a free kick into the net, earning Metro a much-needed point.

  • 9) May 30, 2004: MetroStars 1, Kansas City 0
The two teams were tied in the 73rd minute, when, off a Guevara free kick, Eddie Gaven hit a ball off the crossbar. John Wolyniec, in traffic in front of the net, flew into the air, then headed the ball -- in an improbable position, while parallel to the ground -- for the lone score of the match.

  • 8) June 26, 1996: MetroStars 2, Kansas City 0
Metro's first win of the Wiz came during the 1996 mid-season mini-revival, the second of three shutouts after Rhett Harty shaved his head. Giovanni Savarese opened the scoring and Tab Ramos got his first Metro goal, kicking in a rebound from a Manny Lagos shot from the top of the box.

  • 7) September 10, 2005: Kansas City 0, MetroStars 1
The 2005 season ended with Metro making up a huge deficit to pip the Wiz for the last playoff spot. It would have not been possible without this late-season game. Tony Meola made his return to Kansas City and got the shutout. Gaven played hero, as his shot ricocheted off a Wiz defender for the lone goal of the game.

  • 6) June 26, 2010: Kansas City 0, New York 3
Metro used the friendly bounces of the turf of CommunityAmerica Ballpark to run away from the Wiz. First, Juan Pablo Angel nodded a Bouna Coundoul goal kick. The ball bounced and landed onto the path of Salou Ibrahim, who opened the scoring. Angel would add two himself, the last after being shoved to the ground. The Cherubic Assassin got up and scored from an acute angle.

  • 5) July 28, 2004: Kansas City 1, MetroStars 2
Metro opened the scoring after John Wolyniec set up Cornell Glen. KC evened it on a penalty kick. Early in the second half, the Wiz got another penalty, but Jonny Walker came up with a huge save. Then, in the 66th, Guevara perfectly placed a free kick over the wall and into the net for the victory.

  • 4) October 2, 2010: New York 1, Kansas City 0
Metro needed a win to clinch a playoff berth, and a win they got. Dane Richards blew by the Wiz defense to score six minutes in, and Metro hanged on for dear life. Coundoul had his best game in a New York uniform, saving shot after shot.

  • 3) May 2, 2001: MetroStars 4, Kansas City 1
After KC scored early, it was Clint Mathis time. The beloved Metro scored with his right off a direct free kick, then with his left, and then with his head off a corner kick to get his scored career hat trick. Adolfo Valencia finished out the scoring.

  • 2) July 8, 2000: Kansas City 0, MetroStars 1
Tim Howard ascended to greatness with a spectacular match. The young goalkeeper stopped shot after shot against the league's leading team. With the game scoreless in the 87th, Mathis received a pass from Billy Walsh and beat Meola for a terrific victory.

  • 1) October 14, 2006: New York 3, Kansas City 2
The stage was set perfectly: one game left in the regular season, the winner goes into the playoffs, the loser stays home (in case of the tie, KC got in). Future Metro Dave van den Bergh scored early for the Wiz, and all looked lost. But that's until Guevara had his say. Two perfectly placed penalties gave Metro the lead. Then, in the 75th, Guevara trickled a long shot in. That proved to be the winner, but KC had to make it interesting late. Metro denied the Wiz a playoff berth for the second straight year.
