Soler: Backe to return in 2012
October 18, 2011
If you were thinking if Metro's disappointing season means the end of Hans Backe, think again. GM Erik Soler told the New York Times, "Hans is the head coach next season, regardless [what happens]. I met with our owner three weeks ago to discuss the next two seasons. Red Bull is showing a lot of faith, of course they want to win all the time."
Soler also spoke on the Dwayne De Rosario trade. "He didn't work out, he didn't score. He's a great player as long as he has the ball, and we already have those kinds of players here. Our problem is not scoring goals, our problem is defensive mistakes. He's not a guy who likes to play a complementary role. He didn't fit in. I'm happy for him. He's a great guy, but he wouldn't score 15 goals here. We know that Thierry Henry needs the ball, and on a smaller scale DeRo is the same. It's not our mistake. It just didn't work out."
So here's a question, Mr. Soler... You obviously knew what player De Rosario is, and if he was not to fit well in your system, why did you acquire him in the first place? Well, let's see what you said at the time of the trade...
"Dwayne has been one of the league's best players over the past several years and we are thrilled that he is a Red Bull. He is one of the most dangerous players MLS has seen in the attacking third and he is a true leader both on and off the field. At the end, we think this is a massive step in our quest towards the MLS Cup title."
Massive step indeed.
