Metro at Chicago, 2006

The horrors of Chicago
June 14, 2012
Everyone knows about Metro's failure to win in New England. The winless streak stretches back to 2002 and is now at 17 games. However, Metro did tally four victories in Foxboro before that horror started.
Metro has only won in Chicago three times out of 23 attempts in all competitions. In fact, of the MLS teams that debuted in the 1990s, Chicago is the only one that Metro has beaten on the road so infrequently. They even won more at Tampa and Miami, and those clubs stopped existing a decade ago!
Strangely enough, Metro won their first ever game in Chicago in 1998, beating the expansion team that ended up winning the MLS and Open Cup double. The game is remembered for Mike Petke's debut and Alexi Lalas' header goal, the lone of the match... back then we had no idea that one will become a Metro legend and the other will proceed to ruin the club.
The second victory came in 2002, with another 1:0 scoreline. On a scorching afternoon in Naperville (Soldier Field was renovated), Tim Howard had a brilliant game, stopping everything that the Fire threw at him. Rodrigo Faria scored one late to give Metro the win.
The final victory came in 2005, as Metro came into Soldier Field and trashed the Fire 3:0. Eddie Gaven and Amado Guevara were brilliant, the former scoring twice, the latter scoring and assisting.
And since then... nothing. Metro has not won in Toyota Park, which they helped open with a loss in 2006. The winless streak now stands at ten in all competitions, the last loss a brutal 4:0 Open Cup drubbing that "Clever" Hans Backe decided to sit out. On the bright side, the last two MLS games in Chicago have been ties... better than a loss, we guess.
So, pending a playoff matchup, this week marks Metro's only chance of 2012 to end the streak. And the horror. Oh, the horror.
