Reserves thumped by Montreal in opener
March 24, 2013 (Official Game Summary)
The New York Red Bulls fell to the Montreal Impact 3-0 Sunday in the side's first Reserve League match of the 2013 season.
Montreal shot out of the gate early when Zakaria Messoudi lobbed one past the Red Bulls back line that was quickly met by a rushing Andrew Wenger to one-time it into the goal past Santiago Castano in the 16th minute.
The Impact doubled up 13 minutes later, when midfielder Collen Warner hit teammate Kevin Luarca in stride, beating Castano with a left-footed shot on the far post.
New York mustered up chances from Josue Martinez, including a 20-yard blast that was stopped by Montreal keeper Evan Bush, and another free kick from 25 yards out in the 28th minute that was pushed aside by Bush. Martinez let one go from just outside the box in the 42nd minute that beat Bush on the far post but hit woodwork and bounced off target. Ruben Bover got his head on a ball into the box in the 62nd minute, but just sent it high over the crossbar.
Unable to close the gap, the Red Bulls switched things up with a few subs in the latter stages of the half, but watched the deficit increase to three when midfielder Blake Smith took a feed from Wenger in the 83rd minute for the final goal of the match.
