Peguy Luyindula, playoff hero
November 18, 2014

Early in the 2013 season, Metro signed a forward. A forward who couldn't score.

It's not like Peguy Luyindula was a nobody. Here was a French international who had spent years with some of his country's top teams. A champion many times over. A goalscorer. He couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.

How bad was Luyindula? He ended with one goal in 2013, that on a gift penalty kick, the last tally in a 4:0 laugher over Montreal. It was supposed to give him his confidence back. It didn't. Whiffs were followed by comical misses were followed by whiffs.

So Luyindula reinvented himself. The goalscorer became a playmaker. His three assists in the Supporters Shield clinching victory will forever go down as one of the greatest individual performances in team history.

Those three assists where exactly three times Luyindula's 2014 season total. Oh, the newly-minted playmaker did somehow manage to score five goals, but somehow just one of his passes led to tally. What was his role again?

Flash forward to the playoffs.

Two assists in the win over Kansas City. An assist and a goal in the opener vs DC. The back-breaking goal in the closer. These were two of the most important goals ever scored in team history. What happened?

"In football, it's not really about how many goals you're gonna score, or how many assists you're gonna make, if these goals and assists are not in an effective game. You have to be effective at the right time. You have to be prepared for making history. That's how you win titles."

That was Luyindula at media day prior to this season. He made it clear: not all games are created equal. The Shield game? The playoff games? Those are on a different level.

Well, the playoff games are not over yet. Here's to Peguy Luyindula, playoff hero.
