The idiot in charge
Metro denied ICC title by idiotic rule
July 29, 2015

Of all the incompetency we have seen over the years in MLS, it has nothing on the International Champions Cup. Oh, the glory of such an important tournament reduced to a sham by idiotic organizers!

Metro went 3-0-1 in the tournament, for 10 points. They were the only team not to lose a game. PSG went 3-1-0 in the tournament, for 10 points. They lost a game, but won the title. WHAT THE HELL?

Let us explain such idiocy: for purposes of evening out the competition, Metro's MLS games against LA and San Jose counted towards the ICC. However, "pure" ICC games that were tied after 90 minutes went to penalty kicks. There, a team that won the penalty kick shootout got an extra point for a total of two. The team that lost the shootout still got a point.

So, in its penultimate game, PSG tied Chelsea in regulation, 1:1, but lost on penalty kicks, 6:5. (Let's not forget that this is the same Chelsea team thoroughly beaten up by Metro's reserves.) That loss was worth one point for PSG. With their 2:0 win over Manchester United tonight, they equaled Metro on goal difference of +5, but won the title by the virtue of more goals scored, 10 to 9.

But here is a problem: Metro never got a chance to shoot penalty kicks after their 1:1 tie with LA! They never got a chance to earn the extra point that would have given them 11 to top the table!

This is an outrage of momentous proportions. The point of a fair competition is that the rules should be equal for everyone. Here, they were not. Fess up, International Champions Cup organizer, our old friend Charlie Stillitano: your tournament is a sham. It's a joke. It's a colossal waste of time.
