The most important goal ever
November 27, 2015

There is no question about the most important goal in Metro history. Dave van den Bergh, November 15, 2008, Metro at Salt Lake, MLS Cup semifinals. As everyone knows, that was the only score of the game. Metro advanced to MLS Cup for the first (and only) time ever.

(One can make the case that one of the goals that led to the 2013 Supporters Shield win, say Titi Henry's amazing volley that tied the match, can lay claim to the title. Considering Metro scored five in that game and ran away with it, we will not.)

One game, one goal, one win, one trip to MLS Cup. It was that simple. It's not that simple anymore.

This weekend, Metro faces an incredibly tough challenge. One goal will not do it. Two goals will (likely) not do it. Three goals might not do it. To make that MLS Cup for the second time, Metro would need a herculean feat not yet seen in its history.

But we know one thing: if it does happen -- and, yes, as unlikely as it seems, it might happen -- the goal that does it will move past van den Bergh tally's and sit on top of the list. The circumstances in 2008 were groundbreaking; if Metro would move on in 2015, they would be earth-shattering.

Here's hoping.
