Boca Juniors defeated the MetroStars today, 2-1, at the legendary La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rookie Mike Magee scored the lone Metro goal, but it was not enough to stop two goals by striker Herrera as Boca beat the MetroStars for
the first time in three career exhibitions.
"We were disappointed to lose today's match," said MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley. "We started well and scored the first goal and had some chances to get the second. I thought we got a little careless towards the end of the first half and allowed Boca to get into the match, but these are good matches to learn from these situations."
Magee opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Richie Williams, from the center of the field just outside the box, threaded a pass finding Magee, who dribbled around a defender to blast a shot for a 1-0 lead.
Boca Juniors fought back to tie the game on a goal by striker Herrera in the 39th minute. Defender Pedro Mendez crossed the ball into the box from the right wing, where it found Herrera for a one-timer past goalkeeper Paul Grafer for the tying goal.
The home side took the lead two minutes into the second half on another Herrera strike. Robert Waltner sent a through ball to Herrera, who went in alone on Grafer to finish for the one-goal lead and eventual final.
The MetroStars will return to New York/New Jersey this upcoming Saturday morning. The players and staff will have the weekend off before getting together again for daily training sessions in the bubble at Giants Stadium. The first training session is tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 31 at
10:00 a.m. ET.
