The MetroStars won their first game of the season, beating Columbus 1:0. Rookie Mike Magee scored his first professional goal (and the Metros' first goal this season not from the penalty spot) off a Clint Mathis corner kick. After the game, Magee had to catch a flight to Chicago to attend his girlfriend's high school prom.

For the first time this season, Magee began the game on the bench as Bob Bradley decided to start John Wolyniec in his place. The other change from last week was placing Craig Ziadie at left back and pushing Joey DiGiamarino into the left midfield, the same setup that Metros used in the second half versus Los Angeles. Amado Guevara missed the game because of his commitments to Honduras.

But Magee didn't stay on the bench for long, as Jaime Moreno had to leave the game in the 22nd minute with a strained lower back. The rookie, much-maligned for his up-and-down efforts in first two games, finally made his critics shut up (he's just 18, for crying out loud!) by scoring the game winner in the 59th. After Steve Jolley misfired off a Mathis corner, the ball landed at Magee's feet, and the youngster knocked it in under the bar.

Tim Howard recorded his first shutout of the young season and the Metro central defense of Jolley and Eddie Pope completely marked out the "dangerous" Columbus forwards out of the game.

Lineup: Howard, Ziadie, Jolley, Pope, Leitch, Clark, Williams, DiGiamarino, Mathis, Wolyniec, Moreno. Subs: Magee, LeBlanc.
