Metros win 3rd in a row, 1:0 over DC Scum
May 10, 2003
Looks like Clint Mathis is back. The once-mohawked one scored for his second straight game and Tim Howard recorded his second shutout of the season as the Metros won their third straight one-goal game, 1:0 over DC Scum.
With Chris Leitch out after last week's injury, Craig Ziadie slid into his usual right back spot, with Joey DiGiamarino filling in on the left. Mark Lisi made his first start of the season and Mike Magee regained his starting spot from John Wolyniec. Metro all-time games and minutes leader Mike Petke started in the center of defense for DC Scum and screwed up a golden scoring opportunity, not being able to control the ball with Howard lying on the ground after punching out a shot.
The lone goal came in the waning minutes of the first half off a wonderful pass by Amado Guevara. After a give-and-go with Lisi, the Honduran sent in a perfect lob into the box right to the onrushing Mathis who chested it and then easily put it into the net.
While the Metros owned most of the ball in the first half, the second one proved to be more even, with DC Scum gaining many opportunities to tie the game, their incompetent forwards only to be denied again and again by the Metro defense. Howard came up big time and again, stopping a DC breakaway with nothing but net behind him. Guevara had two excellent chances to enlarge the score, but in both cases whacked the ball too high over the bar. After further DC incompetence in what seemed like an hour of stoppage time, the whistle blew on the Metros' third straight victory.
Lineup: Howard, DiGiamarino, Jolley, Pope, Ziadie, Clark, Williams, Lisi, Guevara, Magee, Mathis. Subs: Wolyniec, Regan, Arena.
