4th in a row! Metros blank Rapids 2:0
May 17, 2003
Clint Mathis and Mike Magee scored second-half goals and Tim Howard recorded his second straight shutout as the Metros won their fourth straight game, 2:0 over Colorado. Mathis' goal was his third in three games. The win put the Metros on top of the Eastern conference after Columbus' loss to San Jose.
For the first time this year, the Metros started the same lineup for two games in a row, but that did not last for long as Richie Williams was forced to leave the field with a sprained toe in the 28th minute. He was replaced by Tim Regan, getting his first significant minutes of his Metro career.
The Metros opened the scoring in the 51st minute as Mathis received a pass from Guevara at the right edge of the box and then sent a low ball diagonally to beat Scott Garlick at the left post. Just nine minutes later, Magee got his second of the season as Garlick could not hold on to a rebound of an Amado Guevara shot. Guevara probably played his best game in a Metro uniform.
The Metros finished the game with ten men as Joey DiGiamarino was sent off in his return to Colorado nine minutes from time, a small blemish in a terrific win.
Fourth win in a row? Who would have thought it!
Lineup: Howard, DiGiamarino, Jolley, Pope, Ziadie, Clark, Williams, Lisi, Guevara, Magee, Mathis. Subs: Regan, Arena, Wolyniec.
