The club from Iceland almost scored after five minutes when Tim Howard fouled a player inside the box scrambling for a loose ball. Steve Shak, playing in central defense, failed to clear a cross resulting in Howard coming off his line to try to get to the ball before the Fylkir forward. The Portuguese referee awarded Ole Stigsson a penalty kick, but Tim Howard guess correctly to his right and stopped the goal to the delight of the MetroStars bench.
The MetroStars scored in the 43rd minute in a scramble in front of the goal. Mark Chung sent a cross to Adolfo Valencia, but his header was blocked away by the goalkeeper. O'Neil Peart, in the right place, did an acrobatic kick to knock home the rebound through the lower left-hand corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The MetroStars scored their second goal in the 57th minute on a goal by Alex Comas with an assist by Tab Ramos. The Colombian striker received a Ramos pass inside the box, beat one defender, and without any other defender around sent a low roller past the keeper inside the right post.
