5th in a row: Comas' PK flushes Rapids
May 16, 2001
The MetroStars won their 5th in a row, downing Colorado 1:0. Alex Comas scored the only goal a penalty kick. The win ties the Metros franchise record for consecutive wins and puts then six points up on Miami for first overall (Miami does have two games in hand).
Comas' PK came in the 11th minute after Adin Brown tripped Clint Mathis in the box. Comas easily converted, for what amounted to his only real contribution for the 45 minutes he spent on the field. But a goal is a goal.
The rest of the match was very even, as both the Metros and Colorado had their share of chances. Richie Williams and Steve Shak, the latter starting for the suspended Petter Villegas, both just misfired on long range shots in the first half. Tim Howard played brilliantly (helped by the Rapids' ineptitude on the offensive end), recording his second consecutive shutout.
Lineup: Howard, Perez, Petke, Jolley, Chung, Alvarez, Williams, Shak, Ramos, Mathis, Comas. Subs: Faria, Semioli, Klinger.
