Paul Grafer recorded his first shutout as a MetroStar and Mike Magee scored his fourth goal of the season as the Metros downed LA, 1:0. The result snaps a three-game winless streak. The MetroStars withstood a massive LA assault in the final minutes of the game to preserve the win.
Juan Forchetti started his first game of the year and played extremely well in central defense. The only other change from last week was the start of John Wolyniec, who returned from suspension. However, 20 minutes into the game the Metros were forced to make a sub as Joey DiGiamarino pulled up with an injury, Tim Regan replacing him.
The first half saw a number of missed opportunities on both ends, with a number of them coming from Wolyniec. Whenever he seemed to be through on goal, Wolyniec muffed a scoring chance, leaving the game scoreless at the half.
The goal came in the 65th minute as Magee took the ball upfield and left it for Mark Lisi. As three Galaxy defenders started watching Lisi, Magee sprung past them and received a return pass with only Kevin Hartman left to beat. The rookie easily put it into the net, a ball that proved to be the final margin.
Late in the game, Grafer made a number of key saves, including an amazing one on a Alex Pineda Chacon free kick as time was expiring. He might not be Tim Howard, but, at least today, he was an equal.
Lineup: Grafer, DiGiamarino, Jolley, Forchetti, Ziadie, Clark, Williams, Lisi, Guevara, Magee, Wolyniec. Subs: Regan, Moreno, LeBlanc.
