The MetroStars defeated Polish first division club Amica Wronki, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Hotel Montechoro Soccer Complex in Albufeira, Portugal. The win, played with regulation time and unlimited substitutions, raises the MetroStars record to a perfect 3-0 on their 2001 TAP Air Portugal Preseason Tour.
The MetroStars scored in the 25th minute on a pretty goal by Alex Comas. Mike Petke sent a pass from the center circle down the left side to Mark Chung, who took the ball deep into the box. Chung immediately stopped inside the box, enabling the right back to slide by, and then took the ball calmly into the middle of the box for a roller to Comas who slammed home the goal for the 1-0 lead.
In the 66th minute, the Polish side tied the game. A cross into the box was met easily by their tall striker who knocked home the tying goal into the right corner for a 1-1 game.
O'Neil Peart put the MetroStars ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute. The Paterson, New Jersey striker used his speed on a counter attack to beat two defenders to the goal for an easy score as the goalkeeper came off his line unsuccessfully.
Chung took the lead to 3-1 in the 80th minute when he intercepted a pass just outside the box. Chung, who assisted on the first goal, one-timed the intercepted pass into the upper right hand corner of the goal.
Tim Howard played all 90 minutes in goal, recording four saves in the 3-1 win.
