Lisi, Magee give Metros miracle tie at RFK
September 28, 2003
A miraculous goal by Mike Magee with just seconds left in regulation gave the Metros an important tie with DC Scum, 1:1. Mark Lisi sent in a free kick in the fifth minute of extra time that found Magee's head and ended in the back of the DC net. The goal was scored with the Metros down to ten men, Clint Mathis receiving his second yellow card some ten minutes earlier.
Fueled somewhat by Amado Guevara's suspension, somewhat by ineffective play mid-week, the Metros came out with a new midfield. Edgar Bartolomeu and Chris Leitch manned the wings, with Ricardo Clark stepping back to partner Richie Williams in defensive midfield. Eddie Gaven took over for Guevara at the center and was often the best player on the field throughout the scoreless foul-filled first half.
The Metros controlled most of the play until the 64th minute, when Leitch brought down Bobby Convey at the edge of the box, the referee pointing to the spot. Jonny Walker guessed correctly, but Marco Etcheverry's perfect placement gave DC the lead.
With Mathis out after some play-acting on Convey's part, it was the insertion of usual starter Lisi that made the difference. A foul in midfield, Magee's run to get behind DC's defense, a perfectly sent ball into the box, and Mike's head gave Metros the tie when all seemed to be lost. DC had the best chance of overtime, Earnie Stewart hitting the side netting, as the Metros seemed happy to escape with a point that was miracuously retrieved.
