July 2, 2004 (Official Press Release)
MetroStars midfielder Gilberto Flores underwent a successful procedure last evening to repair a ruptured torn posterior tibial tendon in his left ankle. Dr. Edward Decter performed the procedure at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. The MetroStars 20-year-old midfielder will be out 12 to 16 weeks.
Gilberto was injured in last Saturday's game against the New England Revolution, after a strong tackle by an opposing player. Pablo Brenes replaced the Brazilian in the 24th minute.
Acquired as a developmental player on March 31, 2004, Gilberto has appeared and started in four games, earning one assist during the MetroStars' 2-1 victory over the L.A. Galaxy on June 19. Gilberto also played a key role in the team's victory in the La Manga Cup, a preseason tournament held in La Manga, Murcia, Spain.
