Metros take three in the supplemental draft
February 4, 2005 (Official Press Release)

The MetroStars made three selections today in the 2005 MLS Supplemental SuperDraft: defender Jason Hernandez, goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan and forward Usiel Vazquez.

With the sixth pick in the first round, the Metros drafted Hernandez, a 21-year-old defender from Seton Hall University. Hernandez, an Englewood, NJ native and Paramus Catholic H.S. graduate, garnered All-Big East Second Team honors in 2004 and was also named to the adidas/NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region All-America Third Team. A four-year starter and two-year captain, Hernandez compiled a 42-28-12 record and helped the Pirates qualify for the NCAA tournament in each of his four seasons.

In the third round, the MetroStars selected Hannigan, a 6'3", 200-pound goalkeeper from Temple University. In 2004, Hannigan compiled a 11-7-2 record with a 1.00 goals-against average. He made 89 saves and posted eight shutouts en route to being named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

The MetroStars picked Vazquez with the sixth selection in the fourth round. Vazquez, a 5'11", 175-pound forward from Southern Connecticut State University, started all 20 games in 2004 and led the Owls in scoring with 14 goals and seven assists. A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Vazquez was named to the Northeast-10 First Team in 2004 and the Second Team in 2003 after netting nine goals and recording seven assists.
