Metros beat US U-20s for first win of preseason
February 13, 2005 (Official Game Summary)
The MetroStars downed the U.S. Under-20 National Team Sunday afternoon, 2-1, on goals by Mike Magee and Vlade Gluscevic. Gluscevic netted the game winner midway through the second half.
Sigi Schmid's U-20 Club jumped out to an early lead after midfielder Jay Denny headed home a Michael Gavin free kick. Metros' forward Eddie Gaven almost tied it shortly thereafter on a blistering shot from the 25. However, Gaven's try caught the crossbar and was cleared by the U-20's.
Gaven's shot was created by Amado Guevara, whose touch left Gaven a clear path to the goal. This marked Guevara's first action of the 2005 preseason in a Metros uniform and his teammates were glad to have him back.
The Metros would knot the score at one in the 37th minute when midfielder Cherif Toure served a free kick to forward Mike Magee who headed it past goalkeeper Justin Hughes on the near post. The goal was Magee's first of the preseason.
Magee almost set up the go-ahead goal after he took a Bradley feed and crossed it into the box to forward Eamon Zayed. With his back to the net, Zayed's bicycle attempt sailed just over the goal.
In the second half, Vlade Gluscevic scored what proved to be the game winner, as he headed home a Yossi Rosen cornerkick. The assist was Rosen's second of the preseason, having also contributed to Zayed's goal against FC Dallas on Tuesday.
As has been the case with each game this preseason, the MetroStars looked sharper than they did during their previous outing.
