Galvan Rey
03.18.05 · Preseason

Sergio Galvan Rey's goal in the 23th minute was enough to defeat W Connection, 1-0, in the MetroStars' final match of their international preseason training. Goalkeeper Zach Wells was steady in net for the Metros and earned the clean sheet.

Galvan Rey's goal came after W Connection's netminder Alejandro Figueroa chased down a through ball on the endline, ten yards away from his net. A hustling John Wolyniec sprinted towards Figueroa and pressured the displaced keeper, who rushed to clear the ball. Figueroa's errant pass was intercepted by Galvan Rey, who fired into the vacant net before the goalkeeper managed to get back into position.

Wells withstood a number of attacks by W Connection and was credited with seven saves in the match. The second-year UCLA product made an outstanding save in the 14th minute, diving to his right to stone a shot put on net by Ronaldo Viana. Wells met another Connection challenge in the 21st minute, when forward William Da Silva Olivera unleashed a knuckler from 25 yards out, but Wells was able to corral it.

A frightening moment occurred shortly after the second half began, as W Connection's David Atiba Charles caught MetroStars invitee Nicholas Adderly with a vicious elbow to the side of the head. Adderly was knocked unconscious and had to be helped off the field on a stretcher. He was taken to nearby hospital and is listed in stable condition. Charles was dismissed with a red card.
