Defender John Doyle scored a pair of goals and goalkeeper Joe Cannon made six saves as the Earthquakes defeated the MetroStars, 2-0, before a home-opener crowd of 20,824 at Spartan Stadium Saturday night. Doyle, who recorded his first multi-goal game in his MLS career, scored his first off a corner kick by Richard Mulrooney after being left unmarked inside the box in the 21st minute. He scored his second 10 minutes later when Mulrooney sent a freekick from midfield to Doyle, who leaped high enough over the Metros defense for the 2-0 advantage on the header. The Earthquakes outshot the MetroStars, 9-3, in the first half keeping goalkeeper Mike Ammann busy from the start. The MetroStars played a much better second half, outshooting their opponents, 9-2, but where unable to put one past Cannon (six saves) who saved solid scoring attempts by Lothar Matthaus in the 71st minute and Orlando Perez in the 85th minute.
