Goalkeeper Tim Howard led the MetroStars to a 1-0 victory over the league-leading Kansas City Wizards Saturday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. Forward Clint Mathis registered the game-winning goal late in the game, overcoming the stingy Kansas City defense and the brutal summer heat to upset the Wizards' nine-game home unbeaten streak. In the 87th minute of play, Mathis got the ball past goalkeeper Tony Meola to put the MetroStars up 1-0. Tab Ramos started the play from behind the midfield line, springing Billy Walsh along the left flank. Walsh's cross found Mathis unmarked at the top of the penalty area, leaving Mathis with a clean shot on net. Mathis made no mistake, putting the ball past Meola and into the back of the net. The goal was the first allowed by Meola and the Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium since Kansas City's 4-3 season opening win over the Chicago Fire on March 25th. MetroStars 'keeper Tim Howard, starting his fourth game in place of the injured Mike Ammann, was a key factor in the Metros' success. Howard dominated his penalty area, recording seven saves to earn his third clean sheet of the 2000 season. In four appearances this year, Howard has only allowed one goal. The two teams tested each other throughout the first half, battling in the sweltering 100-plus degree heat. Both sides managed to create a handful of chances, but neither could find the back of the net in the first half. Kansas City missed two key opportunities before the whistle, including a Preki chance that was snuffed out at the last second by MetroStars defender Steve Jolley.
