The MetroStars defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 in overtime Saturday night at Giants Stadium. MetroStars forward Adolfo Valencia recorded two goals on the night, including the golden goal in overtime.

After 86 minutes of tense, defensive soccer, the game exploded with two goals in less than a minute. New England's Wolde Harris started the scoring in the 87th minute of play, netting his fifth goal in as many games. Midfielder John Harkes delivered an outswinging corner kick into the penalty area, where Costa Rican defender Mauricio Wright nodded the ball against the flow of play. Harris found the ball at his feet in front of the net, and delivered a powerful shot just inside the near post, beating goalkeeper Mike Ammann.

The MetroStars wasted no time in equalizing, as Valencia put home his 12th goal of the year in the 88th minute. Clint Mathis played the ball into the penalty area from the outskirts of the box, and the big Colombian began a short run onto the near post. As 'keeper Juergen Sommer rushed out to challenge, Valencia deftly played a soft ball between the 'keepers legs and into the net.

The overtime period was fraught with excitement from the opening whistle, when Eric Wynalda's apparent game-winner was nullified by an offside call in the first minute of overtime. Seconds later, New England defender Rusty Pierce came within inches of scoring a disastrous own goal off a deflection of a Mathis shot.

Valencia scored off the ensuing corner kick to seal the MetroStars victory. Mathis' well-placed corner was struck soundly by Valencia, who nodded a powerful header past Sommer for the win. The MetroStars are 3-1-2 in overtime play.

Lineup: Ammann, Jolley, Matthaus, Petke, Corrales, Shak, Chung, Walsh, Villegas, Valencia, Comas. Subs: Mathis, Semioli.
