John Wolyniec gave the 10-man Metros a ray of hope, but New England equalized with time winding down to keep the Metros winless at home. The game ended 2:2 as the Metros entered a stretch of five games in 15 days.
The MetroStars made one change from last week's lineup that easily beat Chicago; Abbe Ibrahim, fresh off back-to-back two-goal games in the reserves, got his first professional start in the place of Mike Magee.
New England struck first in just the sixth minute. A Pat Noonan cross found Taylor Twellman, who one-timed it directly at Zach Wells... and directly off Wells into the Metro net. The lead didn't last long, however, as Metros equalized off a one-timer of their own. Eddie Gaven, coming off a two-goal game of his own, continued his tear by slamming home a Tim Ward cross. The assist was Ward's first career MLS point.
Ibrahim was sprung twice in the first half, his speed very difficult for the Rev defenders to handle. Unfortunately, his chance that came right after the New England goal went just wide, and the one in dying minutes of the half was saved by Matt Reis' hand.
The early second half saw a flurry of activity, as first Tim Regan cleared as shot off the line and then Chris Leitch sprung Ibrahim, but again the shot went wide. But the game changed in the 66th minute as Ibrahim was shown a second yellow card on a phantom foul on Jay Heaps. From that point on, the Metros spent the game behind the ball, as New England set attack after attack in Metro direction. However, it was the Metros who were able to break through first. In the 83rd minute, Mark Lisi, operating close to the Rev box, slowed down the play, then sprung Magee, who sent a perfect pass in to another substitute, Wolyniec. Woly, in his true fashion, ended up on the ground, but knocked it in for his first goal of the year.
But the lead did not last as six minutes later, the Revs responded, Twellman skying over out-of-position Wells and heading the ball into the Metro net. A valiant effort from the Metros, but they could have done better after all is said and done.
Lineup: Wells, Ward, Agoos, Regan, Leitch, Bradley, Lisi, Guevara, Gaven, Djorkaeff, Ibrahim. Subs: Magee, Parke, Wolyniec.
