Mathisless Metros fall to DC, 2:1
June 13, 2001
Playing their first game since Clint Mathis' season ending injury, the Metros fell in DC, 2:1. An incredible performance by Tim Howard could not save the Metros from extending their winless streak to four games, as for the second straight game they blew an early 1:0 lead resulting from a Rodrigo Faria goal.
Faria scored his third of the year in the 10th minute, after a nifty pass from Tab Ramos. The Metros never looked in control, however, as that attack was the only substantial one in the first half. DC barraged Howard with shot after shot and only Timmy's brilliance kept the Metros ahead at the break.
DC continued to pressure in the second half, and got a lucky break in the 69th minute as what seemed like a harmless shot bounced off Mike Petke past Howard. Then, nine minutes later, DC got the lead, with Thompson Conteh beating the offside trap, and then Howard in a one-on-one.
Both Petter Villegas and Steve Shak left the game with injuries in the first half. DC was reduced to ten men after Chino Alegria produced a horrendous foul on Orlando Perez after being on the field for less than one minute.
Lineup: Howard, Perez, Petke, Jolley, Chung, Semioli, Shak, Villegas, Ramos, Faria, Valencia. Subs: Walsh, Comas.
