The MetroStars reserve team got a late second half goal from Mike Magee to come from behind to beat the Chivas USA reserve team 2-1 Monday morning. Right from the opening kickoff, both the MetroStars and Chivas USA reserve teams played like they had something to prove. The two sides intensely fought for possession of the ball and quickly created chances at both ends of the field. There was clearly some tension between the two teams left over from Sunday night's game.
The MetroStars had trouble stringing together passes early on, but their passing improved as the game progressed. MetroStars defender Seth Stammler wore the captain's armband and provided several key tackles to keep Chivas USA at bay. Keeper Zach Wells was solid as well, and never looked bothered by the Chivas USA attack.
Chivas USA struck first as Isaac Romo headed in a cross from Christian Jiminez in the 19th minute.
The MetroStars equalized in the 44th minute when Eric Quill sent a through-ball to Jarrod Laventure. The Metros forward deftly rolled the ball past Chivas keeper Sergio Garcia from 15 yards out.
Chivas USA defender Jose Retiz got the only yellow card of the game in the 35th minute, when MetroStars forward Abbe Ibrahim ran up the wing when Retiz tackled him from behind. The first substitutions of the game occurred in the 61st minute as Chivas USA brought in midfielder Rene Corona and defender Dru Hoshimiya.
Robens Jerome acted as a super sub for the MetroStars as he helped score the game winner soon after he came on in the 83rd minute. Robens ran up the right wing and provided a low cross to a waiting Mike Magee 10-yards in front of the net. Magee tapped the ball into the net in the 85th minute just as a Chivas USA defender closed in on him from behind.
Chivas USA got desperate near the end of the game as keeper Sergio Garcia was red carded for a hard tackle on a breaking Jerome at the edge of the box.
