Ten Best: Metro games
September 1, 2005
You have probably seen "MetroStars Classics" on MSG, as they are being endlessly repeated throughout the year; condensed version of ten games in Metro history, all deemed important for one reason or another. Some of those choices were great, some leave us scratching our heads. So here is MetroFanatic's take on the ten best games in Metro history; the only prerequisite is that the game had to end in a win... shootout counts.
10) September 30, 2000: MetroStars 2, Chicago 0
The King returns as Mike Ammann, not fully recovered for his injuries, comes back in the playoffs. The Metros, completely dominated by the Fire just four days earlier, dominate one themselves. Chung and Valencia score and Ammann posts the first shutout in Metro playoff history as the series is evened.
9) June 23, 2004: Los Angeles 0, MetroStars 3
The MetroStars play an incredible first half, dominating the supposed best team in the league on their home field. Amado Guevara scores one and Eddie Gaven adds two as the Metros completely put on a clinic against the Galaxy. The second half turns into a clinic too, a defensive one. As good a 90 minutes as we've ever seen the Metros play.
8) September 26, 2001: MetroStars 4, Los Angeles 1
Coming off a tie in their playoff opener, the MetroStars score four goals in an 11-minute span, starting in the 72nd minute, to beat the Galaxy. Rodrigo Faria gets two, and Mark Chung and Valencia also figure in the scoring. The Metros take a series lead which would vanish three days later.
7) May 20, 2000: MetroStars 3, Tampa Bay 2 (OT)
In Clint Mathis' first game with Metro, Tampa Bay jumps out to a first-half two-goal lead, with Mamadou Diallo scoring both. But Adolfo Valencia answers twice in the second half, the second in the 88th minute. Then, Petter Villegas connects on a blast in overtime to pull out the comeback win.
6) October 1, 2003: MetroStars 3, DC United 2
In the Open Cup semifinals at Rutgers, the Metros make the first final in team history. Amado Guevara scores the Metros' first two goals, but it is John Wolyniec who plays hero, scoring the team's third with just two minutes left in regulation.
