Mo Johnston: "Burning desire to win" (Part 3)
October 18, 2005

MF: No fan out there has seen the Chicago game unless they were at the stadium, and when the team lost the two-goal lead, people were calling for your head after just 90 minutes. And now you're almost universally praised, you know how fickle fans are.
MJ: Call for my head any day. I have no problems in being fired. I've told Alexi that, I've told certain people that in our organization. Hey, if you're fired, you're fired. I had one game, we were 2-0 up, Razov gets red carded, we had our backs against the wall. And at the end of the day, we got one point, and in the next two games, we got three points. Not an easy job going to DC, we take three points, and not an easy job going to Chivas with our backs against the wall, under a lot of pressure to win the game and we come out and trump them 2-0. Me personally, I grew up with pressure my whole life.

MF: Is there an assistant coach, or just you and Des?
MJ: Me and Dessie, that's it. We're flying high, and at the end of the day, I'll move this team forward with everything I have, and if it's not good enough for the job, then send me packing.

MF: Mark Lisi, is he one of the players that has to perform better? He had a great pass on the goal, but...
MJ: Who would you play in there?

MF: Maybe you play Mike Magee.
MJ: When Magee is a central forward, why would you play him in there?

MF: Magee has been playing midfield this year... Or maybe you put Tim Regan there, or Seth Stammler.
MJ: I did place Tim Regan there.

MF: But then you moved him to the left side.
MJ: Yes, and then I brought Amado back in. We don't have enough defensive midfield players. This team is lacking in certain areas and given the job, I'll make the areas better. Right now, I'm dealing with what we have. I hope and I pray that we can get the deal done, but when you ask about Mark Lisi, Mark Lisi possesses the passing areas that we need, and he made one of the best passes for the goal. Now, there are certain areas where Mark Lisi has to get better, and he was told at halftime in DC that he was under par. Not good enough. For me personally, Mark Lisi is a good player, we don't have enough of players in that area to have someone else in there.

MF: But the team signed Daniel Garipe.
MJ: Daniel Garipe right now is not where he needs to be. End of story.

MF: So he's not gonna play.
MJ: No. No part.

MF: Why did the team sign him?
MJ: The team signed him because we needed cover for that area. We fealt he can throw out something different. Right now, he's not where he needs to be. It's taken a lot longer for his visa, which fans don't understand and at the end of the day, he's not fit enough to merit a place in the squad. He lasted 15 minutes in the reserves against Chivas, he got red carded. Not even close.
