Mo Johnston: "Burning desire to win" (Part 5)
October 18, 2005
MF: So if you keep the job, will there be a big turnover of players?
MJ: Yes. Big. I'm not happy with this team. I want to be training hard, I want it fast, I want one or two touch, what we tried in the past, I want it better. I want to challenge these players like they haven't been challenged before. At the end of the day, if it's not good enough, then my ass goes.
MF: There were moments this season, last season, when the team looked great. And then next week...
MJ: Consistency. Consistency is the biggest thing for me. And that's what I've been trying to tell these players. At halftime, it was not good enough. When I say that I have a burning desire, I'm their coach, so it's not good enough on my behalf either, because at the end of the day, I made them go out and perform for 45 minutes in a way that is not acceptable for me. And I don't like it. I have a burning desire to bring this organization back and let our fans see a little bit of what I have. And hopefully, I can get it and win on Saturday night. New England better be prepared to come out fighting, because it's a boxing match. We're gonna fight them and fight them hard. Stevie knows that. Steve Nicol called me up after the DC game, and I said to him, "listen, you guys can beat DC, I know you can." He says, "You guys possess certain things that I've seen tonight, I've got to get by you." I said, "We got a hard game with Chivas." He says, "No. I know we're playing you." And that's what Stevie thinks of me. And I think exactly the same, the way he coaches, he has a very good squad. But you know what? He knows he's in for a dogfight come Saturday night.
