Metros to sign Gilmar
July 31, 2001
According to numerous sources, the Metros are about to sign Brazilian midfielder/forward Gilmar, finally ending their search to replace the injured Clint Mathis. Gilmar has played in MLS before, in 1997 and 1998 with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, scoring 12 goals and 8 assists in 30 games. He most recently played with Sao Caetano in Brazil, a team that shockingly made the final of the Brazilian Championship and the second round of Copa Libertadores.
Nick Sakiewicz, who was the GM of the Mutiny when Gilmar was in Tampa, ran into his former player at an airport, leading to the potential signing.
