The King is dead
December 22, 2005
It looks like Sergio Galvan Rey's Metro career is over, Mo Johnston told BigAppleSoccer, and Alexi Lalas confirmed to MetroFanatic. "Although we would love to have Sergio back, at this time we are planning to be without him in 2006. His financial expectations were unrealistic," Lalas said. And while we've bashed the King of Goats on this website numerous times and praised him somewhat as well, let us look back at his Metro career.
No one can argue that Galvan Rey's 2004 was horrid. He scored two goals (one from the penalty spot), and only had a single assist, while dropping down in the pecking order under the likes of Cornell Glen and John Wolyniec. His 2005 was much better, but still not great. Seven goals (plus one in the Open Cup), an assist in the playoffs. The goal to beat Dallas in the game before the All-Star break and his last Metro goal, in DC, both stand out; those were the goals were expected the once-upon-a-time King to score. But ten goals in two seasons is not enough, and his countless misses came too often. Sure, Galvan Ray made some nice passes (none of which led to goals). But do you pay a top salary to the King of Nice Passes?
And while we're on the subject of forwards who earn a top salary, the shopping around of Ante Razov is a bit more puzzling. Sure, he took a stupid red card that cost the Metros and which seemed to turn Mo against him. Sure, he has a temper. But the man has scored goals throughout his MLS career, just look at his record against Metro. And this season, he played through pain, delaying his surgery as to miss as little games as possible. Yes, it is possible that Metro can find someone better abroad, but it is always a gamble, like we saw with Galvan Rey. Why not stick with Ante? Sure, he is due a raise, but how wise is it to dump the first true goalscorer Metros have had since Adolfo Valencia in 2000?
