In their first international game that counted, the MetroStars took to school Venezuelan club Deportivo Italchacao, winning 2:0. Adolfo Valencia and Mike Petke scored for the Metros and the outcome was never in doubt as the Venezuelans could not create anything offensively.
Valencia scored in the 23rd minute, pouncing on a rebound in the box and placing it past the mullet-haired Venezuelan goalkeeper. Petke's goal, his first of the year, came in first half injury time, off a header from a Daniel Hernandez free kick.
The win gives the Metros first place in Group C of Copa Merconorte.
Lineup: Howard, Perez, Petke, Jolley, Walsh, Alvarez, Hernandez, Chung, Villegas, Klinger, Valencia. Subs: Williams, Ramos, Dixon.
