Preseason continues as Metros tie DC Scum, 1:1
February 14, 2006 (Official Game Summary)
The MetroStars and D.C. United played to a 1-1 draw Tuesday morning at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., Eddie Gaven scoring the lone goal for the MetroStars. Jamil Walker had put United in front, but Gaven's strike shortly after the break left the sides even. "I don't think there was much soccer played on either side," said MetroStars head coach Mo Johnston. "There was a lot of tackling, but it was a good exercise in terms of fitness." The game had few chances throughout the early going, with both teams opting for a physical style of play over finesse. The MetroStars had their best chance of the first half in the 20th minute. Midfielder Mark Lisi provided the service from the left side and forward Mike Magee was able to head the ball on frame, but D.C. 'keeper Nick Rimando made the save. D.C. struck first after a nice string of passes led to Walker's goal in the 41st minute. A pass from Clyde Simms at the top of the 18 gave Josh Gros some room on the left and he slid a low pass through the box to a streaking Walker. Walker got a foot on it on the doorstep, and Metros goalkeeper Tony Meola got a piece of it, but couldn't keep it out. The MetroStars equalized shortly after the intermission on their best exchange of passes in the game. Gaven received the ball at the top of the 18 from Adrian Serioux and then worked a give-and-go with Amado Guevara to beat D.C.'s second half 'keeper Troy Perkins to the left side. "There was a nice buildup of about six or seven passes and Eddie did a great job of keeping his composure and finishing," said Johnston. This was Guevara's first appearance in game action for the Metro this preseason. The 2004 Honda MLS MVP played 60 minutes. "If you look at Amado, he just came in with the group yesterday and hasn't played with our guys yet," said Johnston. "He looked a little sluggish, but we all know what he can do and what he is capable of. It was a typical first game back." With the draw, the Metros are now 2-1-1 in preseason matches, with a fifth slated for Saturday against the Kansas City Wizards.
